A Brief History of the Steeves

Our ancestral cousins, Manoah and Martha Steves, settled and began farming in the southwest corner of Lulu Island (which is now the city of Richmond, BC) in 1877. All Steeves / Steves in North America came from seven sons (all born in Pennsylvania.) who were the first generation of Henrich and Regina Stief, who came up from Philadelphia and settled in Nova Scotia — New Brunswick in 1766.

These seven hardy sons (Jacob, John, Christian, Frederick, Henry, Lewis, and Matthias) all survived the shorter emigration from Philadelphia, PA to Canada and the first difficult years of existence there.

Daniel Steeves, Managing Director and Guy Steeves, his father, of Steeves Roofing & Solar are the 10th and 9th generation generations respectively of Steeves / Steves in Canada.

Steeves 250 Reunion 2016

In 2016, the Steeves 250 Family reunion picnic was held at Garry Park in Steveston. From a local Metro Vancouver media publication about the global reunion: “The local event, coordinated by Steves’ [Harold] amd cousin Guy Steeves, will be held at the same time as the Steeves 250, which will take place July 22-29 in Hilsborough and Moncton [NB], where event organizers expect roughly 10,000 descendants from across the globe — including Rome,Paris, Chicago, and California — to attend.

Steveston Village (of Richmond, BC – formerly Lulu Island)

The village is named for Manoah Steves, who arrived with his family around 1877–1878 from Moncton, New Brunswick, via Chatham, Ontario. Born Manoah Steeves, he dropped the second ‘e’ en route to the west. The Steves family was the first white settlers in the area. The townsite began in 1880 as a crown grant to William Herbert Steves.

Philadelphia to the Maritimes, Canada

The group of  immigrant families left Philadelphia on 26 or 27 April 1766, sailed on a one-masted sloop named the Lovey, and arrived at Hall’s Creek at the Bend of the Petitcodiac River (the eventual site of the city of Moncton) at 9:30 am on 3 June, the time cleverly calculated by Les Bowser related to the tides which are some of the highest in the world. Heinrich and Regina had lived in Pennsylvania for 16-½ years, and had borne there the seven sons from whom all Steeves trace their ancestry. Every Steeves or Steves you know or have heard of in North America, (and beyond) is related and are decendants from one of the 7 sons — even though they may not even realize it.

Today, the Steveston area is a popular tourist destination and is known for its historic charm and beautiful waterfront location. The Steeves and Steves family heritage continues to be an important part of the town’s history and culture.
